High school just isn't challenging enough for some students—that's why we offer the International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement programs.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE

A rigorous academic program first founded in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1968, the International Baccalaureate® (IB) program now has more than 1,950,000 students in over 160 countries.

IB is a university preparatory program with international acceptance that gives our students an opportunity to earn university credits while in high school and also gives them access to IB-specific scholarships. The IB program develops our students into inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. Student success is measured against international standards and our graduates consistently earn high standings on the international stage.

We offer IB at Collège Miles Macdonell Collegiate. The IB Diploma Program curriculum begins in the Grade 11 year. Students begin their IB experience with preparatory courses in Grades 9 and 10.

Contact Collège Miles Macdonell Collegiate for more information about the IB program.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT

The Advanced Placement Program® (AP) gives our students an opportunity to pursue university-level studies while still in high school. This program was started in 1955 by the College Board, a not-for-profit membership association whose mission is to connect students with college/university success and opportunity. More than 35 million students have participated in the program, accounting for more than 60 million exams written.

AP provides an excellent means to prepare students for the rigours of university and college life. The AP Program enables students to receive credit, advanced placement, or both from those universities participating in the AP Program. The College Board establishes the curriculum for each AP course and provides marking for the exams. Currently, approximately 2.6 million students write more than 4.7 million AP exams in over 140 countries each year.

We offer Advanced Placement courses at the Grade 12 level at:

  • Kildonan-East Collegiate
  • Murdoch MacKay Collegiate
  • River East Collegiate

We encourage our students who excel in their regular classes to speak to their subject teachers about pursuing the academic enrichment that comes with registration in an AP course. Our students have risen to the challenge and we have had many National Scholars, a designation based on their standings in AP exams written every May.

Information about AP is available at each high school.
