Language Programs & Courses

We offer programs in four languages—English, French, German, and Ukrainian—and also offer courses in Japanese and Spanish.

FRENCH IMMERSION

We offer basic French in Grades 4–12 across the division, and French immersion, which allows our students to study French more intensively and graduate with the ability to fluently speak, read, and write in both English and French. Our dual-track schools offer both English and French immersion programming, while our four French milieu schools have only French immersion.

Students enter the French immersion program in kindergarten or Grade 1, or have the option of late entry into the program in Grade 6 at École Munroe Middle School. In Grade 12, students have the opportunity to obtain an international credential of French language proficiency (Diplôme d'etudes en langue française or DELF), which qualifies them to study at French-speaking universities in Europe.

ENGLISH-GERMAN BILINGUAL PROGRAM

We offer the only English-German Bilingual Program in Winnipeg. The program begins in kindergarten and continues through to Grade 8. Senior years (Grades 9-12) German programming continues to be school-based German courses at River East Collegiate. Students who wish to attend REC for school based German courses and are not in the school’s catchment will continue to attend as in-division schools of choice students. These students will be required to complete a letter of intent, when they register for grade 9, that identifies their reason for application as the opportunity to take school based German courses across all four years.

ENGLISH-UKRAINIAN BILINGUAL PROGRAM

The English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program begins in kindergarten and continues through to Grade 8. The program gives our students the opportunity to become proficient in both Ukrainian and English. After Grade 8, students may write challenge exams offered through Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning to receive high school accreditation.

SPANISH

Students can also study Spanish at Collège Miles Macdonell Collegiate, Collège Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau, Kildonan-East Collegiate, and River East Collegiate. This course provides students with an introduction to the language and include oral and written components, as well as an exploration of the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries.
