SERVICES AND SUPPORTS FOR STUDENTS

In RETSD, we believe every student deserves the support they need to feel safe, included, and ready to learn. Students have different strengths, needs, and ways of learning. Our schools work with students and families to understand each student and put appropriate supports in place if needed. This is not separate from curricula, school activities, or even safety plans—it is a part of creating safe and inclusive learning environments where everyone can succeed.
Teachers, educational assistants, clinicians, counsellors, administrators, and other professionals help diverse students to learn curricular outcomes and global competencies, but they also support students with social/emotional, sensory, behavioural, physical, cognitive, adaptive, communication, and healthcare needs and learning. They model respect, civility, and inclusivity, proactively showing all students how to do the same.
School staff are supported by a multi-disciplinary team of professionals that help to implement programming for student inclusion, learning, and growth. They also help to equip students with tools to process and regulate difficult emotions and manage behaviours. Learning to manage behaviour and to cope with curveballs is part of every student’s journey.
Service Delivery
When students experience challenges or require additional supports, RETSD Student Services staff may provide support to the in-school team through screenings, consultations, specialized assessments, or other classroom programming. If a recommendation is made for specialized assessment or ongoing program support, a formal referral is completed by the school team and signed by the parents or guardians.
If you are a parent or guardian who has questions or concerns about resources and supports for your child at school, please see additional information here: Student Services.
