Physical Education
The physical education program at École John Henderson Middle School ol strives to equip our students with the necessary skills and knowledge for leading a physically active and healthy lifestyle. The three main strands of the physical education program include a curricular, intramural and interscholastic component, all of which provide for the continued physical, cognitive and social development of all our students.
Curricular component – This component of the program focuses on the acquisition of skills and abilities in the area of movement, fitness management and safety. Through this learning process, students are exposed to a wide range of traditional and non-traditional games and activities, as they work towards the adoption of a physically active and healthy lifestyle.
Intramural component – This component of the program offers lunch hour activities to all students. Intramurals include traditional and non-traditional activities run through various formats. Some activities are scheduled as class vs. class, FA vs. FA, team sign-up or simply just showing up and playing. Also, a part of our intramural program is open gym. Open gym lasts for 15 minutes every morning, where students freely come into the gym to shoot hoops or play volleyball before the school day formally gets started.
Interscholastic component – This component of the program provides opportunities for our students to further develop their athletic skills and abilities in the midst of competition with other schools. The interscholastic program consists of cross-country running, volleyball, wrestling, basketball, indoor track, badminton and outdoor track and field. While players for the volleyball, basketball, badminton and outdoor track and field teams are selected through a try out process, cross-country running, wrestling and indoor track has no try out process, as these activities allow for mass participation.
