Four RETSD Teachers Recognized for Impact

On May 5, four RETSD teachers were honoured at the 33rd Annual Students’ Teacher Recognition Reception at the University of Manitoba.

Each faculty nominates an outstanding graduating student, who then selects two teachers who’ve made important contributions to their education—one from their K–12 years and one from their time at the U of M.

This year, four from our division received this special recognition: Trang Do (Collège Miles Macdonell Collegiate), Kim Dudek (John Pritchard School), and Catherine Ramsay and Cherylene Kentner (River East Collegiate). Congratulations!

Superintendent Sandra Herbst was present and shared that it was incredibly moving to hear from the students about why they selected the teachers they did. She said that, while each story was unique, several common themes emerged:

  • Making not just personal connections, but connecting through the subjects they taught
  • Being that charismatic adult who encouraged and supported them to do difficult things
  • Showing unwavering belief in the students, even when they didn’t yet believe in themselves
  • Creating classroom spaces where students felt seen, safe, and inspired to learn

Let this serve as a reminder of the profound impact teachers have on students’ lives.
