Policies

Entry and Dismissal

Grades K – 3 students enter from the back door at the east end of the building. Grades 4 – 5 students enter from the back door by the gym. All students are to exit through rear doors of the school unless accompanied by an adult. 

Student safety is important to all of us. We wish to ensure that students move in a safe and orderly way in the building.  If you have alternate arrangements for your child to go home, please send a note to your child’s teacher, or phone early enough so that we have adequate time to let your child know. Please wait to meet your child outside their dismissal doors.

Attendance/Lates

Students are expected to be at school on time and prepared to work to the best of their ability. If a student must be absent or late, parents are requested to telephone the school or provide a note in advance. Students are considered late if they are not in their classroom by 8:50 a.m. or 12:35 p.m. Students who arrive late need to enter through the front doors and check in at the office. If parents/guardians are picking a student up early they need to also come to the office and sign their child out. For the safety and protection of your children it is important that we know where students are at all times during the school day. 

Callback Program

The school will call parents or emergency contacts if we have not heard from you about the reason for the absence. It is very important that the school be updated with any change in home numbers, work numbers or emergency contact numbers. Students having to go home for supplies, forgotten articles or assignments must have permission from the principal and parent or guardian. If a student becomes ill at school, parents, guardians or emergency contacts will be contacted.

Lost & Found

The lost and found is located at the east end of the school near the primary entrance. Please feel free to check it for articles, which may belong to your child. Items not claimed at the end of December, March and June will be donated to a local thrift shop. Please label your child’s clothing and belongings to assist in a prompt return if misplaced.

Assessment and Reporting

Assessment is an ongoing process that supports learning on a daily basis in our classrooms. Report cards are sent out in November, March and June. Parents/guardians are invited to parent/student/teacher conferences at these times to discuss their child’s progress and celebrate success.

Recess

Students have a 15-minute recess in the morning and in the afternoon. The morning recess is from 10:05 am to 10:20 am. The afternoon recess is from 2:00 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.  Students are expected to come dressed for outdoor weather, so that they can enjoy these breaks.

Lunchroom

The Polson School lunch committee provides a supervised lunch program (supervised by lunch program staff) for registered students. The cost is $30 per month, with the first month September, costing $40.  Students have the opportunity to have lunches heated if they wish. Registration forms are available upon request at the school office.

Newsletter

The newsletter will be sent home with the youngest student in the family approximately once a month. This newsletter contains important and interesting information and it will keep you informed about school events. Also, please use the calendar in the newsletter to assist you in planning medical appointments so that as little time as possible is missed from school. 

Parent Association

The parent association is an opportunity for parents/guardians to be involved in their children’s education and be informed about school issues. It is made up of a parent executive, parents, a staff representative and the school administrator who meet informally once a month at 6:30 in the library during the school year. The goals of the association are to work with the school to:

  • Promote parental involvement in educational issues and decisions
  • Organize activities/fundraisers that support the school
  • Promote a positive family/school/community relationship
