KEC Students Invited to Meet Prime Minister

Several Kildonan-East Collegiate students were invited to take part in a media event with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at The Forks yesterday, as he spoke about water use legislation and formally announced that the Canada Water Agency will be headquartered in Winnipeg.

The students had front-row seats to Trudeau’s announcement and were able to engage with him in person. They also shared their Indigenous knowledge about water, land, and plants during an interactive walking classroom led by Waterways Canada. 

Waterways is an Indigenous-led non-profit group that works with the students in a canoe education program that affirms their Indigenous identity and builds confidence. As well as canoeing, they spend time engaging in land-based recreation and learn from Elders and Knowledge Keepers who help increase the cultural and spiritual connection the youth have to their community and land.

Some other activities they take part in over a five-day period in the program include a water safety seminar, a plant-identification nature walk, traditional games, an introduction to dragon boats, a beading and soapstone workshop, a talk about Métis history, and a sharing circle.
