Activities

Student Leadership

The student leadership team is made up of grade 4 and 5 students who are given the opportunity to be role models, decision makers, mentors and leaders in the school. Guided by a classroom teacher, they meet one to two times a week to plan, organize and implement various school initiatives.  Other leadership opportunities include:

Announcers

Grade 4 and 5 students read the morning announcements daily on the P.A. All students in the school take turns saying the pledge during morning announcements.

Big Buddies

Grade5 students are paired with kindergarten students and act as mentors for assemblies, for school events like field day and as reading buddies on a regular basis.

Patrols

Grade 4 and 5  students are trained to patrol as kindergarten patrols, bus patrols or street patrols.  They participate in training two times a year and are provided with recognition, rewards and special events in appreciation of their contribution. They provide a valuable service to the students and to the community.

Lunch Monitors

Grade 5 students may be asked to volunteer to assist the Emerson Lunch Program by helping in the Grade 1, 2 and 3 classrooms. They act as mentors and help the younger students during the first half of the lunch hour.

Nursery Helpers

Grade 5 students volunteer in the River East Scholars Nursery program by helping out in the nursery during recess and lunch and during their special events.

Milk Helpers

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the first part of the lunch hour, two pairs of Grade 3 students leave class 10 minutes early to distribute milk to students who bring a pre-paid ticket for milk. Milk is sold at two milk stations within the school.

Office Assistants

This program provides volunteer mentorship and leadership opportunities for students in Grade 5. Pairs of students assist in the office over the lunch hour by answering the phone and directing inquiries to the appropriate people, as well as carrying out simple office tasks.
