Devonshire Reconfiguration Information
January 31, 2025
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We’re writing to inform you of the plan to reconfigure the catchment boundaries of Bernie Wolfe School and Joseph Teres School. Students will be relocated to either Westview School, Maple Leaf School, or École Sun Valley School for the 2025–26 school year, and, for some, to Chief Peguis Middle School for the 2026–27 school year.
The Board of Trustees has done its due diligence in relentlessly advocating for the construction of new schools in River East Transcona School Division. We are hopeful that our increasing needs have been recognized and that the government will announce that a new Grades K-8 school will be built in the Devonshire area in the very near future. Even with that pending, a new school will take time to plan and build. Our current needs require immediate action for the fall of 2025.
Both Bernie Wolfe and Joseph Teres are at or exceeding enrolment capacity, and these communities are expected to continue growing for some time. We need to make changes now to reduce pressure on both schools for the next few years. Fortunately, our short-term plans to reconfigure boundaries will support us in alleviating immediate enrolment pressures.
The changes are listed below:
Joseph Teres
• Boundaries will change for some students in Grades K–4 who will move to Sun Valley—this school has space within its facilities. • At the end of Grade 5 at Sun Valley, impacted students will return to their designated Transcona-area catchment school for middle years.
Bernie Wolfe
• Boundaries will change for some students in Grades K–4 who will move to the reconfigured boundaries of Westview—this school has space within its facilities.
• Students moving to Westview will remain at the school for Grades K–5, as this represents a permanent boundary change. John W. Gunn will be the designated middle years school for these students.
• Boundaries will change for some other students in Grades K–4 who will move to Maple Leaf for Grades K–5. Chief Peguis will become the designated middle years school for those students. Both schools have space within their facilities.
All these changes will go into effect in September 2025. Chief Peguis will not be impacted until the following September.
A virtual parent evening will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. for all families in impacted schools. This meeting will provide a broad overview of the rationale and changes. Registration to take part in this meeting can be done at: Devonshire Reconfiguration Meeting Registration. Once you’ve registered, a link to access the meeting will be sent to you.
An in-person meeting will be held for each school in the first two weeks of February to answer specific questions for each school community. That date and time will be sent out by the school shortly.
Information about our plan will be updated following the meetings on both the divisional website and your school website. If you have any questions prior to the meetings, please speak with your school principal or email communications@retsd.mb.ca.
The Board will continue to keep parents informed as planning continues. We’d like to thank you for your support and patience as these changes take place.
