OUR LIBRARY
Welcome to our school Library Learning Commons
Welcome to the library learning commons and to our program of information literacy. We believe that every student should have the skills necessary to navigate in today's information-rich society. Determining information needs, recognizing and selecting appropriate resources - whether print or online and managing the information are fundamental skills needed for successful academic research.
Mrs. Hutton, who is our half-time Library Technician, works days 1, 3 and 5 and deals with the day-to-day operation of the library, including book exchanges. Mrs. Dent Scarcello, the Teacher Librarian, is in the library on days 2, 4, and 6, and she works collaboratively with classroom teachers on inquiry-based units.

Program Description
Each class is scheduled for library once every 6-day cycle. During this class, students are introduced to a variety of literature and spend time searching for, selecting and signing out books. Students are also welcome to exchange their books throughout the cycle by visiting the library at a convenient time.
Our library program aims ensure that all our students have many opportunities to enjoy reading. This is accomplished by providing students with a variety of reading materials and literature-based programs. We also work together to ensure all students become informationally literate by the time they finish Grade Five. We use an inquiry-based learning (IBL) program, which is a collaborative model of learning through which students develop the skills necessary to navigate in today's information-rich society. Each homeroom takes part in at least one IBL project which is planned and taught by both Mrs. Dent Scarcello and the classroom teacher. Students learn how to determine information needs, recognize and select appropriate resources - whether print or online, and manage and share information, as these are all essential skills needed for successful academic research.
