creating student success

High school just isn't challenging enough for some students – that's why we have the International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement programs.

International Baccalaureate

A rigorous academic program first founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968, the International Baccalaureate (IB) program now has more than 900,000 students in over 140 countries.

We offer IB at Miles Macdonell Collegiate.

IB is a university preparatory program with international acceptance that gives our students an opportunity to earn university credits while in high school and also gives them access to IB-specific scholarships.

The IB program develops our students into inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

Student success is measured against international standards and our graduates consistently earn high standings on the international stage.

The International Baccalaureate is a two-year diploma program. Students enrol in the program in Grade 11 and Grade 12. At Miles Macdonell Collegiate, students begin their IB studies with an IB preparatory year in Grade 10.

Contact Miles Macdonell Collegiate for more information about the IB program.

Advanced Placement

The Advanced Placement program gives our students an opportunity to pursue university-level studies while still in high school.

It not only prepares them for the rigours of university and college life, but enables them to receive credit, advanced placement, or both from those universities participating in the AP program. The College Board establishes the curriculum for each AP course and sets and provides marking for the exams. Almost 2 million students write AP exams in 117 countries each year.

We offer Advanced Placement courses at the Grade 12 level at:

  • Kildonan-East Collegiate
  • Murdoch MacKay Collegiate
  • River East Collegiate

We encourage our students who excel in their regular classes to speak to their subject teachers about registering for the academic enrichment that comes with taking an AP course. Our students have risen to the challenge and over the years, we have had many national scholars, a designation that is based on their standings in Advanced Placement exams written every May.

Information about AP is available at each high school.
